Wear Your Favorite Clothes - Even in a Pandemic

As we slide into February in what feels like the “Spring of our (collective) Discontent”, it is totally normal to feel, well, completely abnormal. We have uncertainty about the future, struggle to see loved ones, and bustling workplaces have changed into long-term WFH. A friend of mine (who is not a social media star) admitted that she purchased a ring light, just to appear more fresh and attractive on her frequent Zoom calls.

As a casual/athleisure designer in the past, I have always loved sweatpants. Not only did I wear sweats at home, but also to my office, on a plane and even to nightclubs (just add sexy shoes and lipstick). I enjoyed the subtle glances I would get from people when I did this – usually surprise mixed with a hint of envy. After all, my outfit allowed me to dance as for long as my feet could stand it.  I found it fun, and a bit subversive.

Now with each sweatpant-wearing day melting into the next, I’ve found myself dreaming about the more special pieces in my closet. For a recent socially distanced hangout, I donned my grey sweatpants and mask like usual, but at the last minute added my new rhinestone high-heeled booties. They were an impulse purchase last Fall, and I didn’t feel like waiting for the world to open to wear them. It instantly lifted my mood.  Another friend told me that when she works from home her uniform is a comfy sweater, leggings and a strand of real pearls. Adding in her favorite jewelry makes her feel a little more “dressed” and ready for the day.

So, dear reader, I beg you – don’t forget what your favorite wardrobe items do for you mentally. They are not too expensive or too “special” to be worn and loved. In a strange twist, putting them on might just make you feel a little more - normal.
