Tips for Closet Organization
1. Do one section at a time. Many times, when we think of a big project i.e. “I have to clean out my whole dresser” it’s too daunting and we will either never start, or will give up easily. Set small goals for yourself that you can accomplish and feel proud of, then move onto the next one.
2. Find your system. If there’s something that’s not flowing nicely in your home, first strategize what system would work better. The good news is, there’s no need to re-invent the wheel! My two main frameworks are either to sort by color first (i.e. all blue items together) or category first (i.e. long sleeve shirts together).
3. Make 3 piles. If you are purging a lot of items I suggest making 3 piles – donate, sell, and “touch base” for later. Give yourself a deadline (I usually say 2 weeks) to think about any items that might be hard to part with. This takes the pressure off of making an immediate decision while sorting. Just make sure to hold yourself accountable to the deadline!
4. Make it Enjoyable. This may sound a little corny, but if I’m feeling lethargic about a project it always helps to set the right energy. Pump up the music, listen to your favorite podcast, take a quick dance break - whatever you need to get inspired and get to work!
